How Caretakers and Family Members Can Work Together Smoothly

RUSHIVA Care Team · 16 October 2026

Why friction sometimes happens

Having someone new involved in caring for a family member can bring up mixed feelings — relief, but sometimes also a sense of stepping back, or disagreement over how things should be done. Recognising this upfront helps avoid unnecessary tension.

Setting clear expectations early

  • Agree on who makes which decisions — daily routine vs. medical matters, for example
  • Be clear about which family habits and preferences matter to you, rather than assuming the caretaker will know
  • Decide on a simple way to communicate updates — a short daily note, or a quick conversation at handover

Respecting the caretaker's expertise

A trained caretaker often has useful experience with positioning, routines, or handling specific needs — it's worth listening to their observations rather than only directing.

Handling disagreements calmly

If something isn't working, address it directly and specifically with the caretaker or provider, rather than letting frustration build. Most issues are easier to resolve early and calmly.

Keeping the patient at the centre

When in doubt about a disagreement, the question that helps most is simply: what does the patient actually need and prefer here?
