Preparing Your Home for a Patient's Safe Recovery
Why this is worth doing before discharge
A home that works fine for everyone else can have real obstacles for someone recovering from surgery, illness, or with reduced mobility. A short walk-through before the patient comes home can prevent falls and make daily tasks far easier.
Bedroom
- Choose a bedroom close to a bathroom if possible, avoiding stairs
- Keep a clear, wide path from the bed to the door and bathroom
- Place a lamp, phone and any needed items within easy reach of the bed
Bathroom
- Add a grab rail near the toilet and inside the shower/bath if there isn't one already
- Use a non-slip mat inside and outside the shower or tub
- Consider a raised toilet seat or shower chair if mobility is limited
General home safety
- Remove loose rugs, trailing wires and clutter from walkways
- Improve lighting in hallways and staircases, especially for night-time movement
- Keep frequently used items at waist height to avoid bending or reaching up
Supplies to have ready
Keep prescribed medicines, dressing supplies, the discharge summary and emergency contact numbers all in one accessible place before the patient arrives home, rather than searching for them later.
