Tracheostomy Care at Home: A Guide for Families

Understanding tracheostomy care

A tracheostomy is an opening created in the neck to help a patient breathe, often used for patients with long-term breathing difficulties or after certain surgeries. Caring for a tracheostomy at home is very manageable with the right training and routine, but it does require consistency and attention to hygiene.

Daily care basics

  • Keep the skin around the tracheostomy clean and dry to prevent irritation or infection
  • Suction secretions as trained by the healthcare team, only when needed
  • Check the ties or holder securing the tube are snug but not too tight
  • Keep humidified air or a cover over the opening as advised, especially in dusty conditions

Tube changes

Tracheostomy tube changes should only be carried out by a trained professional, following a schedule set by the treating doctor. Attempting this without training carries real risk, including difficulty breathing if the tube isn't replaced correctly.

Signs that need urgent attention

  • Difficulty breathing or unusual noise while breathing
  • Bleeding, significant swelling or discharge around the tracheostomy site
  • The tube appears blocked, dislodged, or has come out
  • Fever along with increased secretions

Any of these need immediate medical attention — tracheostomy emergencies should never be managed by waiting for a scheduled visit.
