What Qualifications Should You Expect from Home Nursing Staff?

RUSHIVA Care Team · 16 October 2026

Why this is worth asking about

Procedures like injections, wound dressing and tube care carry real risk if done incorrectly. It's entirely reasonable — and encouraged — to ask a provider how their staff are trained before agreeing to a visit.

Questions worth asking

  • What is the staff member's training background for the specific procedure needed?
  • Is the same person likely to visit each time, or will it vary?
  • How does the provider handle a situation the staff member hasn't encountered before?
  • Who is contacted if something doesn't go as expected during a visit?

What good practice looks like

A trustworthy provider will be able to clearly explain who is coming, why they're qualified for the specific task, and how the visit is coordinated with the patient's treating doctor. Vague or evasive answers to these questions are worth taking seriously.

It's okay to ask again

If a new staff member visits for the first time, it's reasonable to briefly ask about their experience with the specific procedure your family member needs, even if you've used the same provider before.
