Wound Dressing at Home: Why It Matters and What to Expect

RUSHIVA Care Team · 16 October 2026

Why dressing technique matters

A wound that isn't dressed correctly, or isn't changed as often as needed, heals more slowly and is more likely to get infected. This is especially true for surgical wounds, diabetic ulcers, pressure sores (bedsores) and wounds in elderly patients, where healing is naturally slower.

Signs a wound needs attention

Keep an eye out for:

  • Increasing redness, swelling or warmth around the wound
  • Pus or a foul smell from the dressing
  • The wound getting larger rather than smaller over time
  • Fever along with any of the above

If you notice these signs, contact the treating doctor promptly rather than waiting for the next scheduled dressing change.

What a home dressing visit typically involves

A trained professional will clean the wound as advised by the doctor, assess how it's healing, apply a fresh dressing, and note down anything unusual to share with the treating doctor. Regular visits also mean changes in the wound are caught early, rather than only noticed at the next hospital follow-up.

Keeping things ready between visits

  • Store any prescribed dressing materials in a clean, dry place
  • Keep the area around the wound clean and dry between changes
  • Avoid letting the patient apply home remedies to the wound without the doctor's advice
  • Keep a simple written note of each dressing change and how the wound looked
